Lucidchart alternative for org charts
Lucidchart is a collaborative diagramming platform: it imports org chart data from CSV, Excel, Google Sheets and BambooHR, and teams edit together in real time. mivochart is built only for org charts, with staff positions, vacancies and FTE as fields, and its free plan counts people per chart rather than documents and objects.

People look for a Lucidchart alternative for different reasons: the free plan’s limits, the price of a team plan, or simply wanting a tool that does one job. This page tries to show where each one fits.
The comparison covers one task: building and maintaining an org chart from a staff list. Facts about Lucidchart link to Lucid’s own pages, checked on the date shown. Lucid shows its prices in the browser and by region, so we link the pricing page rather than quote a number.

When Lucidchart is the better choice
Lucidchart covers a lot of ground. It is likely the better choice if:
- Several people edit the chart together. Lucidchart has real-time collaboration on the same diagram; mivochart does not.[1]
- Your data is in Google Sheets or BambooHR. Lucidchart imports from both, and a chart linked to Google Sheets updates when you refresh.[1]
- You need other diagrams in the same place. Lucidchart is a general diagramming platform with org charts as one use.[1]
- You exchange files with Visio users. Lucidchart can export Visio VDX/VSDX files.[2]
- You want to embed the chart in Slack or present it straight from the tool.[1]
When mivochart fits better
mivochart is a smaller, single-purpose tool. It tends to fit when:
- You want a free plan that counts people rather than objects: up to 25 people per chart, and lines or labels never count.
- You need staff positions, dotted-line reporting, open positions and FTE as built-in fields, with FTE totals per team.
- The list comes from Excel or an HR export, often with German or French column headings, and you want it mapped without setup.
- You re-import the updated list after each change and want to see who joined, left or moved before applying it.
- You want to start without an account and keep saved charts in the EU (Frankfurt).
- You need an editable PowerPoint or a print-ready poster once a year. A one-time Project Pass (90 days) covers it without a subscription.
What mivochart does not do
- No real-time co-editing: two people cannot work on the same chart at the same moment.
- No single sign-on (SSO) and no live connection to HR systems. Lists from Personio, BambooHR or similar tools are imported as exported files.
- Org charts only. If you also draw flowcharts, network diagrams or floor plans, you need another tool for those.
- The free plan covers up to 25 people per chart and 3 saved charts, and free exports carry a small watermark. PowerPoint export and print PDFs on A3, as poster tiles or one page per department need a Pass or Pro.
How to switch from Lucidchart
Bring the data, not the drawing.
- If you built the Lucidchart org chart from a CSV, Excel file or Google Sheet, use that source. Download a Google Sheet as .xlsx or .csv.
- If you only have the diagram, Lucidchart can export a CSV of shape data. Clean it up to one row per person with name, title, department and manager.
- Make sure the manager column holds the manager’s name or e-mail address, then upload the file on the import page and check the preview.
- Add staff positions, dotted lines, vacancies and FTE in the editor if your list did not include them.
Keep the spreadsheet as your source: when people join or leave, update it and import it again.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Lucidchart alternative for org charts?
mivochart is free for org charts up to 25 people per chart and 3 saved charts. Free exports carry a small watermark. Larger charts, PowerPoint export and print PDFs on A3 or as poster tiles need a Pass or Pro.
How many shapes does the Lucidchart free plan allow?
Lucid’s community team stated a limit of 3 editable documents and 60 objects per document on the free plan, with lines and text boxes counting. Check Lucid’s pricing page for the current limits.
Can I import a Lucidchart file into mivochart?
Not the diagram file itself. Export the underlying data as CSV or Excel, make sure each row is one person with their manager, and import that list.
Does mivochart connect to BambooHR?
Not directly. Export the employee list from your HR system as a spreadsheet and import it; the usual columns are recognised. There is no live sync.
Can my team edit the chart together?
Not at the same time. mivochart has no real-time co-editing; one person edits and others view a read-only link or embedded live view. If simultaneous editing is essential, Lucidchart is the better fit.
